Research projects

DAP20-02

The aim of this project is to develop AI-based persistent surveillance algorithms. The necessity for such algorithms arises from the huge amount of imagery that is (or can be) recorded from high-altitude UAV. The goal is to be able to flag anomalous behaviour.

SARSAR

This project aims at developing a system to perform brown-field tracking based on Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 images in order to assist the Walloon Region in the management of these redevelopment sites.

IRIS

This project aims at developping a artificial intelligence-based battlefield situation awareness tool to assist vehicle operators on the battlefield.

Road Radar Jam

The goal is to assess the sensitivity of sensors (Radar and Lidars) on-board modern cars to jamming and deception.

Belsar

In preparation for the SAOCOM-CS satellite, which is a receive-only satellite ajoined to the SAOCOM SAR imaging satellite, an airborne measurement campaign is conducted in order to assess the relevance of different bistatic geometries and the associated issues.

In particular, the role of the Royal Military Academy is to develop requirements for the synchronisation between the transmitter and the receiver, as they will be located on different platforms. The effect of mis-synchronisation will also be modeled and evaluated.

DAP-16-9

The Confident project, conducted in the Improvised Explosive Devices Detection programm of the European Defence Agency, consists in providing IED early warning for convoys.

The Royal Military Academy is in charge of the processing and data fusion of the infrared images with the image coming from the other detectors.

Road Radar

In collaboration with industry and the ULB, the goal is to develop a multichannel radar able to detect trafic.

RMA is more specifically involved in the array processing, the detection algorithms and the tests.

DAP-16-7

The VIEMW3 project, conducted in the Improvised Explosive Devices Detection programm of the European Defence Agency, consists in providing IED early warning for convoys.

The Royal Military Academy is in charge of the processing and data fusion of the infrared images with the image coming from the other detectors.

DAP-16-8

The aim of the study is to develop (semi-)automatic image analysis methods in order to help vectorize topo-geographic objects from satellite imagery and to integrate these in the Geographic service of the Defense in charge of the MGCP project.

EORegions

EO Regions aims at optimizing earth observeration services and valorizing scientific know-how from universities and the private sector by offering substantial and competitive services and by mobilizing users through the demonstration of the potential of these services.

The activities of RMA consist in analyzing and developing change-detection algorithms on stacks of Sentinel-1 images.

SCIRoCCo

The Scatterometer Instrument Competence Centre's (SCIRoCCo) objective is to become a reference center for the international meteorological agencies, meteorological operations centers, and the research and educational community worldwide for the exploitation of the ERS Scatterometer mission data set and of the present and future C-band scatterometer missions data sets. RMA's tasks are to carry out research and development activities in the area of C-band scatterometer inter and cross sensors calibration, processing algorithms for the computation of the radar backscattering, data validation and data quality control, education and outreach.

SENSPORT

This project aims at developing a method based on a radio frequency radar to detect non destructively leaks in underground water transport networks. The involvement of RMA in the projects resides mainly in the image formation process of the volume below the ground surface based on radar measurements obtained through a ground penetrating radar method. Detection of water and other objects such as water pipes will also be tackled.

F13/02

The goal of the study is to assess the feasibility of radar interferometry using radar images produced using transmitters of opportunity.

PhD Osama Mahfoudia

Study of opportunistic DVB-T radars, and more specifically, how to optimize the signal to noise ratio in order to improve detection.

SENSAR

The SENSAR project aims at assessing if and how high resolution soil moisture can be extracted from SAR images at high resolution. One of the key components of the project is the large scale in-situ measurements and a model-based inversion from backscatter to dielectric constant. As a side-product of that inversion, soil roughness information is obtained and that can then be used as a hint to assist in the inversion of the SAR data. The RMA is in charge of the SAR image processing and of part of the inversion process.

SIC/05

The study aims first at automatically extract Digital Surface Models using very high spatial and radiometric resolution images and multiview modes. Second, these DSM will be exploited to perform change detection and produce landscape models.

LIFE B3D

The objective is to correlate cardiovascular and ballistocardiography parameters obtained through a novel analysis of 3 dimensional (3D) movements of the human body that are due to the mechanical action of the beating heart and the ejection of blood in the arteries. The aim is to better understand the cardiovascular changes following the fluid shift observed in microgravity from the analysis of the vecto-ballistocardiograms in humans. The experiment will be performed in parabolic flights and on-board the International Space Station.

NIKO

LIFE NEUROPOLE

The present project is the results of merging ESCOM and COGNIPOLE. ESCOM aims at investigating the effect of exercise on sleep regulation, cognitive performance & mood during both Antarctic summer and winter. COGNIPOLE aims at quantifying the impact of sleep & circadian rhythm disturbance on executive function in the peculiar environment of isolation and confinement in Antarctica. Both projects build further on the results obtained in the Antarctic Sleep Monitoring project.

C4/22

The aim of the project is to perform a detail study of methods to augment the tolerance of electric drives to faults. Both the detection of the faults and the reduction of the influence of these faults are considered, with as objective to maximize the performance of the motor in degraded mode.

MUSAR

The aim of the project is the development of a “proof of concept” passive SAR imaging system with a static receiver. The research activities are naturally divided in two parallel branches with strong interaction between them: the development of the synthesis algorithms and the development of the required hardware.

TOSCA

The scope of this procurement of the ESA is to guarantee the maintenance and the evolution of the Scatterometer data processor prototype and the Scatterometer calibration tool (TOSCA). More notably it involves a study of the cross-calibration of the scatterometer on-board ERS-2 with the scatterometer on-board METOP.

F07/09

This project aims at studying control methods for permanent-magnet synchronous electrical motors. The so-called sensor-less control of the machine is in particular considered in order to eliminate one possible source of fault.

SSA

This project aims at defining the technical configuration of a “European system for Space Situation Awareness”, which answers in an optimal way the “European Union Statement of Need” and deducing from it a list of research projects to be launched.

LIFE SPIN

The projects aims at studying the deconditioning of the cardiovascular system and the vestibular system of astronauts as a consequence of long-duration spaceflights. In a second step, countermeasures against orthostatic intolerance upon return into a gravitational environment are assessed.
