Research projects

SIC17

The aim of this project is to study the detection of command wire in the context of Improvised Explosive Devices detection for road clearance. This project is performed in the framework of the European Defence Agency IEDDET joint program.

MRN10

This study aims at evaluating the added-value of a magnetic sensor to detect buried sea mines or other buried objects in a marine environment. Detection is based on the fact that the ambient magnetic field is slightly modified in the vicinity of a ferromagnetic object.

CEN

To agree on which physical properties of the soil must be taken into account when studying and predicting the performance of metal detectors and ground penetrating radars; If possible a classification of soils with respect to their influence on detection could be agreed upon; Finally protocols for measuring these properties could be proposed. The output of this activity will be a CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA).

In a first phase RMA will write a draft Business Plan (BP) explaining the detailed goals and the way to achieve them. Then CEN workshop meetings will be organised where participants will approve a final Business Plan and find an agreement on the topics defined in it. RMA will chair this CEN workshop.

SMART

The goal of the SMART project is to provide a GIS-based system - the SMART system - augmented with dedicated tools and methods designed to use multispectral and radar data in order to assist the human analyst in the interpretation of the mined scene. The use of SMART includes a short field survey to collect knowledge about the site, a flight campaign to record the data, and the use of the SMART system by an operator to detect indicators of presence or absence of minefields. The operator will prepare thematic maps that will synthesise all the knowledge gathered with these indicators. These maps of indicators can be transformed into ‘danger maps’ showing how dangerous an area may be according to the location of known indicators. These maps are designed to help the area reduction process.
